The first language app built on
cognitive science,
not gamified translation.
Amiora — a blend of Ami (French, friend) and Ora (Latin, to speak). A friendly, conversational language experience that actually moves words from passive recognition into active speech.
The problem
Most language apps are leaky buckets.
Users spend hundreds of days clicking multiple-choice questions, then freeze the moment they're dropped into a real conversation. Existing apps build passive recognition but fail to build active retrieval. Words memorized out of context vanish a week later.
We're not building another Duolingo. We're building the retention engine the category forgot.
The science
Four research-backed principles.
Amiora is built on four of the most powerful, evidence-based principles of language acquisition and behavioral psychology — combined into one closed loop.
-
01
Comprehensible Input
Acquisition happens when learners process messages just slightly beyond their current level — the famous i + 1.
Krashen, 1981 — Input Hypothesis
-
02
Spaced Repetition
Reviewing material at expanding intervals dramatically improves long-term retention, fighting the forgetting curve at exactly the right moments.
Ebbinghaus, 1885 · Bahrick, 1993
-
03
Active Recall
Pulling information out of memory — the testing effect — beats passive restudy for long-term retention by a wide margin.
Roediger & Karpicke, 2006
-
04
Gamification
Points, streaks and milestones, used carefully, leverage behavioral psychology to sustain motivation and consistent engagement.
Hamari, Koivisto & Sarsa, 2014
The product
A closed loop, not four separate apps.
The magic isn't the tabs. It's that they feed each other. A word you discover in a video shows up in your review deck — and again in tonight's roleplay with your AI tutor.
-
Watch
Comprehensible input
An endless, personalized feed of native video — vlogs, clips, scenes — at exactly your level. Tap any word; it lands in your review deck with the full sentence.
-
Words
Spaced repetition
A frictionless daily review of the exact clips and sentences you tapped. The SRS algorithm surfaces them right when your brain is about to forget.
-
Speak
Active recall
A voice-first AI tutor runs dynamic roleplays — and actively prompts you to use the vocabulary you just reviewed. Passive becomes active.
-
Progress
Gamification
Streaks, milestones and dynamic badges keep the habit alive. Foundational modules like the Top 100 Most Common Words gamify your baseline fluency.
Watch provides the context Words guarantee retention Speak forces application Progress builds the habit
When a user discovers a word in a video, reviews it perfectly three days later, and then uses it in conversation —
they're no longer playing a game. They're genuinely acquiring a language.
